Los Angeles, CA, March 25, 2002
Last night, America's minorities saw tremendous gains in Hollywood.
In a historic Oscar night, minorities doubled their number of major Oscar wins (Best Actor, Actress, and Director). The number skyrocketed %200 compared to its previous level, up to 4 total Oscar wins, from last year's 2.
Prior to last night only Jose Ferrer (1950), and Sidney Poitier (1963) were the only two minorities to win in the top categories.
White Americans also had a decent showing at the 74th Oscars, pushing their number of major Oscar wins up to 217, from last year's 216.
African Americans, who are roughly 13.5 percent of the U.S. population now hold almost 1.4 percent of the major Oscar victories.
Latinos who are roughly 14 percent of the U.S. population still hold less than one half of one percent of the major Oscar victories. Latinos are almost 50 percent of the population of Los Angeles, the Oscar's home town.
Asian Americans, who constitute roughly 9 percent of the U.S. population, hold zero percent of the major Oscars. However, Ron Howard, who won his first Oscar last night for directing 'A Beautiful Mind,' did at one point hold his trophy above his head and proclaim "I love this yellow man!"
